'Escuela Hospitalaria'

Areyls's idea of starting a new Community Service project involving a collaboration with the Managua Children's Hospital and NNSCP kids is moving along at last. While she's in the Radiography Center in Managua receiving her 6 week radiation treatment, I met with Dr. Mejia, the Hospital's Director. He was a gracious host and took time out of his busy schedule to explain the methodology of the Escuela. Since kids come here from all other the country and most cases are very serious, parents and patients alike are in need of therapeutic attention. The Ministry of Education supports four teachers who work with the kids in long-term care on academic reenforcement, arts and crafts and music and who also offer necessary assistance to parents. We hope to bring down our first group of NNSCP kids next month to teach art, painting and jewelry making (the bracelets, necklaces and earrings we've been working on for about a year). With Wesleyan University, we'd like to raise the funds for materials so we can supply the center with whatever they need to keep making art.
