San Jose, Costa Rica-enero 2009

Los costarricenses have much to be proud of... a peaceful country with no standing army, a robust commitment to the environment and the promotion of 'eco-tourism' as well as a stable economy. Living in Nicaragua however made me sensitive of the animosity expressed toward the nica immigrants that make their economy possible. Everywhere I went I seemed to meet nicas who were eager to talk about the challenges of the discrimination they live under... as well as ticos who were eager to badmouth them. It is a gorgeous country with infrastructure and wealth that makes it hard to believe that beyond its borders lies incredible poverty... the familiar story throughout the Americas.
