Machismo Mata

We participated in a community awareness raising event on women's rights and organizing against violence. The statistics are very grim for this year. Overall, crimes involving violence against women have risen drastically in 08 throughout the country. Of course higher rates of reporting might play a role but most agree that the economic crisis is to blame for what is a tragically typical formula: more domestic hardship leads to more stress, more alcohol, more beatings. Nicaragua has some of the most progressive laws relating to women's and children's rights in the entire region but with a weak judicial system, little to no local or national political commitment and limited access to legal recourse, the laws largely go unexercised and women and children remain vulnerable.
