for Luz...

Last week, Luz Marina Lezama Suazo, the Director of the Women's and Children Division of the Police Department of a municipality in Granada, southern Nicaragua was killed. Her job was to protect battered and abused women and children. She was shot in the head by her partner in a domestic conflict.
I wrote this for her...

Nicaragua mourns you Luz Marina.
All her mothers and daughters,
Luchadoras cada una.
Through anxious nights and shortened caminos,
we see you, we know you, we felt your fear
también.
Our voices sing melodías
llevadas por aire en donde antes había solo gritos,
gracias a tu Luz.

You, who only tried her best
al final,
eres protectora, amparo.
You Luz, your Luz
nos guia and it reaches us still
como semilla, la fuerza crece
tambien,
gracias a ti Luz.

We, who hold you gently
and with so much love
in our arms, outstretched,
made stronger, mas fuerte.
We stop that golpe, that bala,
también...porque somos capaces.
Gracias a tu Luz.
Gracias a ti Luz.
