linda mujer

This incredible young woman was active in our program before becoming ill about two years ago. Right around the time I arrived here to nagarote, she had her left leg amputated, at around the mid thigh. As drastic as that experience was, we were all hopeful that what the doctor said would hold true, that with the leg being removed, the cancer would not spread.
As it turns out, the cancer has spread and the doctor is now administering a chemotherapy treatment that was donated recently.
We´re in the process of collecting the necessary information for her case as we´re trying to appeal to a foundation that might help her pay for the prosthetic she will need to walk again. This photo is from a trip in January to San Juan del Sur for free eye exams and glasses offered by VOSH, a group of volunteering ophthalmologists. I made an exception for her as she has perfect eye site but hadn´t left her house since the operation. This was an incredibly healing trip for her. Our sewing class professor and i played with her for two beautiful hours in the surf. She had a ball...really smiling and laughing hysterically. The chemo is hell but she has made it back to the Project, coming to our computer class when she`s feeling up to it. I´m interested in her case because I´m fond of her and admire her courage. Ultimately, we know it needs to trancend one story. My time here will be about targeting sustainable, collaborative, community based initiatives that can have a direct result in improving health outcomes and the inequalities that produce illness.
